Mini-Implant Anchorage for Orthodontic Treatment
 Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel
Dr. Baumgaertel received his dental degree with honors from the University of Bonn, Germany, where he later assumed a teaching and research position in the Policlinic for Prosthetic Dentistry. He received his orthodontic education at Case Western Reserve University, and upon completion was invited to join the department as a clinical assistant professor. Dr. Baumgaertel is currently the specialist for placing tomas anchorage pins at Case Western Reserve University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has attained Fellowship in Orthodontics in the Royal College of Canada. He lectures throughout the U.S. on the use of mini screws for temporary orthodontic anchorage, and has over three years of experience in the field of temporary anchorage devices. He is also the main author of two upcoming AJO/DO articles on "Mini-Implant Anchorage for the Orthodontic Practitioner."

The introduction of 'temporary anchorage devices' (TADs) represents an unparalleled paradigm shift in the specialty of orthodontics, where absolute anchorage is no longer an ideal but an everyday reality. This lecture will provide evidence-based information on the theory and practice of orthodontic mini-implant anchorage, and create the knowledge and comfort level necessary for practitioners to treat a wide variety of indications with a high level of success. Topics that will be discussed include treatment planning and implant site location, mini-implant insertion, mini-implant design features, keys to maximizing clinical success rates, simple and efficient biomechanics, and being prepared for both the opportunities and the challenges involved with anchorage pin use.
